Hello Sister Call,
Your son has been serving in my ward since his arrival into Canada and I asked him if it would be okay for me to email you to let you know that he is one of my favorites! The spirit that he carries with him is stronger than most and he has a gentleness about him that is endearing. I have rarely met his equal as a missionary.
I have come to learn that his birthday is the 21st of September and our family has signed up to feed them on that day. When I asked him what he misses most or what he would like me to serve he asked if I knew how to make chicken-pot-pie? I have never actually made it myself, but I imagine that it should be fairly simple. Do you have a recipe I can follow? I would like to make it as closely to what he is used to eating as possible.
He also asked me if I knew what ice cream pie was (I understand he's not really a cake person). Do you have that recipe or instructions on how to make it as well?
With your help we can make his first birthday away from home a memorable and good experience.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
:) {name withheld by me!}

Seriously, did you not have tears in your eyes as you read this letter?? Or is that just reserved for the missionary mom?? I can't even begin to explain what a tender mercy this was. I am so very thankful for this sweet mom who took the time to write to me. She obviously really knows Spenc / Elder Call, because she described him perfectly. His strong spirit. His gentleness. One of her favorites. {sounds just like what I would say!}
I will be forever grateful for this sweet sister! And how amazing is that that she gets to feed my boy on his birthday. Want to know the truth?? I sent off his birthday package last week {to be posted soon on here!}. Anyway, I sent his package off with a prayer that he would have a great birthday in Canada. And already that prayer has been answered. How thankful I am for a loving Heavenly Father who hears and answers our prayers. {usually through another person!}. I pray that I might be an instrument in His hands to be the answer to someone elses prayers.
I am so thankful to be a missionary mom. What sweet blessings we have enjoyed! The spirit in our home is incredible. The love we have for each other has grown ten fold. Although our hearts can get heavy at times missing that sweet boy of ours, we wouldn't want him anywhere else.
We love you Elder Call! Special thanks to Sister Canada {that's what I'll call her!} for being an answer to my prayers, for loving my boy and taking care of him. I will always be eternally grateful!!
With love,
Mom Call
PS Ice cream pie {his favorite!} recipe: Purchase a graham cracker crust {or make one}. Purchase a carton of vanilla ice cream {the only flavor he will eat}. Let the ice cream soften a bit {by the time you get home from the store on a summer day it's usually ready!}. Put the ice cream in the crust, spread around, and freeze. That's it! You can add toppings, chocolate, caramel, fruit, etc.. But Spenc likes it all just plain.
PSS The chicken pot pie recipe? I'm going to have to come up with one. It's one of those recipes that just evolved. He has requested that for his birthday dinner for years! I'm working on that recipe to send up to Canada!
